Airbnb is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to booking a hotel room in many cities around the world, and Chiang Mai is no exception. Within the Old Town and Nimmanhaemin Areas of Chiang Mai, there are plenty of apartments and townhouses that you can rent at very affordable prices when compared to hotels. Some of my friends have done this when visiting Chiang Mai, for up to a month or more. It really takes the hassle out of finding a great place to stay.
But, who wants a boring apartment when there are some absolutely amazing places that you could also rent. I spent an afternoon searching through the hundreds of listings on Airbnb in Chiang Mai to find the best of the best. The villas and other amazing properties located in and around the city that take relaxation to a whole new level.

1. Baan Muan Joy Pool Villa
This amazing pool villa is North of the old town, near the Super Highway and adjacent to the Ping River. It’s close to the CentralFestival shopping mall as well, which has a supermarket, a number of fashion retailers, cinema complex and ice skating rink. Unlike a number of the other villas in this list which are designed for multiple groups, this one is designed just for one couple to stay at. There’s a pool right outside your bedroom and a great outdoors area to relax in as well.

2. Mountain Pool & River Villa
This is a huge villa located alongside a stream/river. With 5 bedrooms including 2 king size beds and 1 queen size bed plus some single beds and a sofa bed, up to 12 people can stay here. And what villa would be complete without a private swimming pool? It’s outside of the main city area of Chiang Mai, nestled along the back side of the mountain Doi Suthep. Definitely a solid pick if you’re looking to get away with a large group of friends or family.

Four bedrooms including one with an outdoor shower. Up to 8 guests in the 3 queen sized and 1 king sized bed, perfect for up to 4 couples. Beautiful living spaces inside and all surrounding an amazingly beautiful pool. Located near the Night Safari in the foothills of Chiang Mai’s south western area of Hang Dong, this is an amazing getaway while still being close enough to the city to explore Chiang Mai’s many beautiful temples.

4. Sala Old Town House
This property is the only one that made the list which is actually located inside the moat of the Old Town of Chiang Mai. Perfectly located near Wat Phra Singh to go exploring the many temples inside the city walls, as well as the famous Chiang Mai Walking Street markets on Saturday and Sunday nights, it’s a truly rare find. There’s only one bedroom here for up to two guests, but it’s an intimate getaway in the old town without getting stuck in a hostel or a poor quality guesthouse with no ambiance.

5. Rice Barn
This converted and renovated Northern Thai or Lanna style rice barn is an amazingly unique place to stay at in Chiang Mai. It has one double bed inside, and you’ll be sharing the grounds with the local couple who own this beautiful building, and their two dogs. They also have two additional rooms in another more modern building that they rent out as well. Their grounds include a swimming pool and outdoor areas for relaxing. It’s located outside of the city on the South Western side, in a small village near Hang Dong – about 20-25 mins to the old town.

6. Japanese Zen Garden
This amazingly beautiful Japanese styled Zen Garden has two bedrooms, each with a queen/king sized bed in them. There’s a koi pond (of course) with a nice low dining table in the middle, where you can hang out with your friends and eat or drink. It’s located about 25 minutes to the East of Chiang Mai’s old town in a quiet little village.

7. River View Tree House
Ask anyone who’s spent a decent length of time in Chiang Mai and they’ll know about these treehouses. Located about 70km north of Chiang Mai, there’s a total of six treehouses in this complex, each one of them unique. Designed and owned by a retired architect, you know you’re in for a treat when you stay here.

8. Luxury Villa with Salt Water Infinity Pool
Nothing quite says luxury escape in South East Asia like a private salt water infinity pool in your own villa. And that’s exactly what you’ll be getting when you sign up to stay at this place in the quiet little Wing Doi Village, North East of Chiang Mai’s old town. There’s three bedrooms, with one king sized bed, one queen sized bed and two double beds. Definitely a solid pick if you’re looking for a luxury escape without the hustle and bustle of downtown Chiang Mai.

45 minutes from Chaing Mai, nestled in foothills of the opposite side of Doi Suthep mountain is this absolutely charming villa that is perfect for either just you and your partner or an entire family get together. It has 9 beds across its 5 bedrooms which means you’ll be able to sleep a lot of people if you are having a big group stay at the villa. With charming views across the valley, it’s got to make your shortlist.

This villa is the ultimate in luxury and we saved the best for last.
